Bathside Battery Bitter

Bathside Battery Bitter – ABV 4.2%

Golden Ale named after the former naval shore battery overlooking Bathside Bay. Heavily hopped to give satisfying bitterness levels, the floral and grapefruit aroma are dues to the oodles of Cascade hops added at the end of the boil.

American style pale ale with oodles of cascade hops. Good bitterness levels followed by sweet hop taste and then the Cascade really kicks in for a real citrus aroma.

  • Named after the Naval shore Battery which overlooked Bathside Bay.
  • Built 1811 to protect Royal Naval fleet against Napoleon's raiders.
  • Opposite the Anchor Inn – now lost to housing development.

Lingering malt sweetness is balanced with smooth bitterness throughout. Barley sugar notes and an unmistakable Cascade nose.

Smooth blond ale with controlled hop bite and plenty of aroma and taste reminiscent of old barley sugar.

  • Named after one of the “lost pubs” of Harwich, the Phoenix Hotel dominated Dovercourt seafront.

A lovely rounded, well-balanced amber beer with malt notes to accompany the orangey hops. A good old-fashioned drinking bitter with a modern twist.

Named after HMS Ganges, the former Naval training base across the river in Shotley this is a classic, well-balanced session bitter with malt and hops in perfect harmony.

  • Originally a training ship – a converted 84-gun second rate ship of the line.
  • Based at Falmouth, Harwich and Shotley.
  • Became a “stone frigate” in 1927.
  • Closed in 1976.
EPA 100

EPA 100 – ABV 3.8%

Brewed to commemorate the Centenary of the Electric Palace Cinema in Harwich this is a classic pale, hoppy premium ale – full of character but with a smooth finish.

A dry, light beer in the modern style but with a good pale malt base and lovely fresh, floral hop character. Fruity hops dominate but never overwhelm and the finish is smooth and satisfying. Named after the Electric Palace Cinema in Harwich.

  • The Electric Palace was built in 1911.
  • Designed to protect the audience from fires caused by the hot projection lamps and flammable film stock.
  • Restored and reopened by the Electric Palace Trust in 1975.
Parkeston Porter

Parkeston Porter – ABV 4.5%

More heavily hopped robust porter in the new-world style. Influenced by US brewers, this porter combines the noble hops of Middle Europe with the best of US hops to create a smooth beer.

Another disappearing beer style, this dark beer is enjoying a small revival among beer lovers. Mid Brown to almost black, with some red hues, this beer contains pale malt and will contain a proportion of roast, black or chocolate malts. Initial sweetness is balanced by later hop bite. This is brewed in the American style with all American hops.

  • Once a familiar sight on Britain's railway platforms, station porters are indeed a dying breed.
  • Named for the baggage handlers at Parkeston Quay.

Redoubt Stout – ABV 4.2%

Rich, dark and silky smooth, this jet-black beer with a tan-coloured head is an absolute delight. Drink with rich stews and game at room temperature in winter, or be daring and lightly chill it during the warmer months.

Named after the Redoubt Fort in Harwich which overlooks the harbour channel, this is a robust stout. Jet black with a tan head, it is the perfect accompanimnet to game and cheese where the dry finish perfectly complements the strong flavours. Bitterness is provided by Pioneer and Pilgrim hops.

  • Redoubt Fort.
  • Circular Napoleonic Fort guarding the entrance to Harwich harbour.
  • Built & established 1808.
  • Abandoned in 1920s.
  • Now houses a Museum.

An easy drinking, full flavoured session beer, Copper coloured flavoured with American & English hops.

Leading lights is the archetypal English bitter. A full flavoured beer full made with pale malt and speciality grains and lightly hopped. Choice English hop varieties balance the sweetness of the malt making this a perfect session beer.

  • The Dovercourt leading lights were finally completed in 1862.
  • Built on rails, they could be moved to accommodate the shifting sands of Dovercourt bay.
Lighthouse Bitter

Lighthouse Bitter – ABV 4.8%

Our Best Bitter; Pale Malt, Crystal Malt and Roast Barley combine for a traditional copper coloured bitter flavoured with traditional Fuggles and Goldings hops.

Named after the “High” Lighthouse in Harwich which dominates the view from the brewery, this is a traditional English best bitter. Ruby coloured and flavoured with the choicest English hops, this is a beer to savour.

  • High Lighthouse.
  • Landward of pair of leading lights.
  • Built & established 1818.
  • Deactivated 1863.
  • Now houses the National Vintage Wireless and Television Museum.

Smooth traditional mild. A very deep reddish hue. Sweet tasting and mildly hopped, perfect after a hard day's work.

A traditional mild made with pale malt, mild malt and roast barley, and lightly hopped with Fuggles and Goldings,. Sales of this style of beer, once a staple of agricultural workers, has been in decline for many years prompting CAMRA to set aside May as mild month in order to promote interest in this type of beer.

Deep red, sweet and lightly hopped, this is the original thirst quenching ale.

  • The Ha'Penny pier opened in 1854.
  • It sold tickets for the continental ferries .
  • So called because a ½d toll was charged.
Bay Bitter

A real summer thirst-quencher this award-winning brew is remarkably flavoursome for its gravity. A massive tropical fruit aroma leads to a full orchestra of fruity hops with a satisfying finish that just leaves you wanting more. Awarded Beer of the Festival at Colchester Beer Festival in 2011.

At a mere 3.6% ABV this beer combines a lovely light golden body with tons of hop character to challenge your taste buds and refresh your palette. A great pint for a relaxing summer afternoon.

  • Named after Dovercourt Bay.
  • Created in Victorian times as a holiday resort.
  • The gently-shelving, sandy beach has a Blue Flag Award.

A crisp, pale beer this alternative summer beer has a smooth pale malt base and crisp hops leading to a long dry finish.

More restrained than the tropical Bay Bitter the crisp, citrus hops go really well with food. Try this with a mildly spicy indian meal or, ideally, a long summer barbecue.

  • Named after the mystery woman in an LNER poster from 1941 by Daphne Padden.
  • She is depicted overlooking Dovercourt Bay – strangely devoid of military activity.
  • She carries a hat and a man waves to her from the promenade.
Misleading Lights

Misleading Lights – ABV 4.0%

A chance encounter with some different yeast led to this-one off brew. In order to ring the changes, it was brewed longer and with more hops than Leading Lights. It became an instant hit and so was added to our regular range, where it punches well above its weight.

A chance encounter with a different yeast led to this one-off brew. Brewed stronger, longer and with more hops than Leading lights, this became an instant hit. The use of four grains and three hop varieties give this beer a depth which belies its strength.

  • Local name for the Dovercourt Leading Lights.
  • By the time they were completed, they were of no use in navigation.
  • Following them would have led you to run aground.
